DERMAPLANING

A PAINLESS, DEEPLY EXFOLIATING TREATMENT TO GIVE YOU A LUMINOUS, BUTTERY SMOOTH GLOW.
Our skin is in a constant state of shedding and regrowth, sluffing up to two pounds of dead skin every year. But as we age, skin cell turnover slows down dramatically. Whereas teenage skin regenerates completely every 10-28 days, skin at age 40 takes 45-60 days to regenerate.

Dermaplaning restores the beauty of your complexion by stimulating cell turnover and removing up to 21 days of dead skin cells. This softens the look of lines, wrinkles, dark spots and melasma while promoting production of collagen and elastin, reducing the signs of aging and scarring.

The procedure is relaxing, painless and chemical-free. With meticulous, careful strokes, your Certified Advanced Esthetician caresses the skin with a sterile blade, removing not only the top layer of your skin, but the vellus hairs (peach fuzz) that can create a dull appearance. Your skin is left buttery-smooth and glowing, an ideal canvas for makeup or skincare products.

Dermaplaning can also be used as a pre-treatment to procedures like Microneedling with AnteAge™, HydraFacial™ or a Chemical Peel to encourage deeper penetration of product and a more pronounced result. Because it requires no downtime, it’s a great way to get ready for a special evening, or whenever you need to be camera-ready. Bring your best face forward!

HOW IT WORKS

Dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation process. We use a rounded-tip surgical blade to gently remove up to 21 days’ worth of dry, dead skin cells and peach fuzz in a painless process that reveals the new skin underneath. This increases the skin’s ability to absorb products; it also helps regulate skin problems that arise from excess buildup of oil and dead cells on the surface of our skin, referred to as the “stratum corneum”.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Dermaplaning is a more aggressive, pain-free form of physical exfoliation that uses a small, rounded tip #10 surgical blade to manually remove up to 3 weeks of dry, dead skin cells.

This treatment can be done as a quarterly maintenance plan or in a series of 3-6 consecutive monthly treatments. Your Luxe Laser Certified Advanced Esthetician will help determine the most appropriate treatment plan for your skin.

Our dermaplaning process is done using a sterile surgical blade in a sanitary environment to ensure against the introduction of bacteria during the service. It is recommended that you keep makeup brushes clean, avoid touching the face, use fresh and clean towels and pillow cases, etc. to ensure that the newly exfoliated skin is not exposed to bacterially dense environments. Do not dermaplane over active acne, which can cause breakouts to worsen.

Dermaplaning operates in a similar fashion to a straight razor shave, which in turn blunts the ends of the hairs and can cause them to feel more stubbly if the hairs in question are terminal, thick hairs. Contrary to popular belief, shaving does not “make hair thicker”. If your hair feels stubbly after a dermaplaning session, you may consider laser hair removal to reduce those unwanted hairs. “Peach fuzz” is removed during the dermaplaning process and does return if you decide to stop dermaplaning.

Not in the least! Dermaplaning is a relaxing treatment that involves a very light scraping of the razor, but it will not cut into the skin.

We do not recommend treating overactive acne. Clients suffering from acne in search of an exfoliating service should consider a chemical peel or a series of Acne Therapy treatments to address this concern before moving on to a dermaplaning treatment.

Discontinue use of all chemical and physical exfoliants like facial scrubs and manual facial brushes for 10 days post treatment.  Avoid irritating ingredients. Nourishing, moisturizing and calming skincare ingredients are a great option for after dermaplaning and until your sensitivity ceases.

Dermaplaning is an excellent option when you want to look your absolute best. Whether you plan to be in front of a camera, have a big date, or just want to feel and look your best, it is a popular choice for clients who want a perfectly smooth and glowing base for makeup.

As with any advanced aesthetic service, if you feel discomfort during the makeup application process or afterward, it’s best to remove and wait until the skin is less sensitive. Only use clean makeup brushes after a dermaplaning service to prevent a breakout. Mineral makeup is preferred to ensure against reactions to potential reactions to ingredients in non-mineral skincare products.

Dermaplaning is recommended to treat dry, rough skin, uneven skin tone, unwanted vellus facial hairs, not terminal hairs. Dermaplaning increases product absorption and efficacy. It promotes a smooth texture, brightens skin, reduces hyperpigmentation, creates a clear complexion, and is beneficial for overall skin rejuvenation, as it boosts the production of collagen and elastin. Makeup application after a service is smooth and flawless.

There is no downtime post-dermaplaning treatment, and you can resume your normal activities immediately following the treatment. There are, however, a few precautions to keep in mind in order to achieve optimal results and a positive experience. See the post-care section below for a full list of precautions after a dermaplaning service.

Discontinue exfoliation for 5-7 days prior to scheduled treatment. This includes physical exfoliation (scrubs, Clarisonic) and chemical exfoliation (salicylic, retinol, glycolic, lactic acid, etc.).

If using prescription topical exfoliants, it is recommended that usage be discontinued a full week prior to treatment.

Your skin may be slightly sensitive and have a pink appearance post-treatment, similar to a sunburn. Excessive sweating and exercise should be avoided for 24 hours post treatment to reduce irritation. Discontinue use of all chemical and physical exfoliants like facial scrubs and manual facial brushes for 10 days post treatment.

Current inflamed acne, pregnant or lactating, severe melasma, skin cancer on face, active cold sores, uncontrolled type 1 diabetes, dermatitis, including eczema and/or psoriasis, open skin lesions, use of Oral Prescription Vitamin A within the previous six months.
